Pickup upgrade for cheap Ibanez

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi

A while ago I bought a cheap ibanez bass. I can't find it on their site, but its basically the GSR200.

I have since bought better basses which I prefer to play and I was thinking of upgrading the pickups on the Ibanez.

I've been eyeing out the EMG P/J Set. I'm not sure what I'm up against, will they make the bass sound better?

Any thoughts/ideas?

If you like the EMGs it might sound better. The expensive, active EMGs would give the most improvement. Otherwise, go passive but with another brand. With that bass I'd go with a Seymour Duncan set, like maybe one using the Basslines #2 Hot for P bass pickup or the #3 Quarter Pounder. Both of these would be a dramatic improvement in my opinion. But those are pickups that I like and use.

The stock set in the Ibanez are not all that bad. If you switch pickups you should go with the best you can if you want any real improvement.

The active preamp in the GSR is sort of so-so. I'd take it out and go with the passive pickups I've mentioned above using the standard volume, blend and tone controls.

A few people here have done just that and might read this post and respond.

The pickups I've been eyeing are these ones: http://www.emginc.com/products/category/24/2

I'll take a look at the Seymour Duncans that you suggest. Thanks for the feedback.

Since I don't use the preamp very much on my GSR200 I just bypassed it with a switch. I run it direct to an fx box with a short cord and have no problems. I would agree that upgrading to less than the best aftermarket pickup won't be worthwhile. I wouldn't bother having a preamp in the bass unless (1) you need the tone shaping or (2) you will have a long cable to the amp and need it as a buffer.

I have 3 of those basses and I got rid of the pickups and electronics. The bridge pickup is too thin 'twangy' sounding and the preamp is just a mid scoop. For the pickups I bought various used and new Fender PJ pickups off ebay. For the electronics I made JFET and opamp based preamps. HUGE improvement in the sound without spending a lot of money
