Pickup wiring assistance needed

Sign in to disble this ad
Guys, I need some help. I've looked for diagrams that fit my situation, but have not found any. I'll try to give as detailed a description as I can.

I have a passive bass I'm messing around with in which I'm putting 2 new Mighty Mite soapbar pickups. Each of the pickups has a single wire coming out with 2 parts, one white and one with yellow tape.

I purchased from BestBassGear.com a prewired wiring harness:
Quote:
Volume - Blend - Tone - Tone

2 Pickup - 4 knob configuration

Contains:
- 1 Audio Taper 250K Pot (Noble)
- 1 250K Blend Pot (Noble)
- 2 Audio Taper 250K Pot (Noble) w/Capacitor (Sprague Orange Drop .047)
- 1 Standard Stero Jack (Switchcraft)
On the harness, there are three "open" wires coming out (not soldered to anything) - a black one from the jack, a black one from the first tone pot (middle connector) and a white one from the second tone pot (middle connector).

I supposed the harness would come with a diagram, but it did not. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

dude, that second tone control is throwing me off. without actually seeing the harness, i hesitate to offer any definitive advice, EXCEPT: brian at bestbassgear builds custom basses. i'm sure if you email him he can tell you in a few words how to wire it up correctly.

Without seeing it and without a DMM, please take this with a boulder sized grain of salt, BUT:

Do the two center lugs of the 6-pole blend pot have something soldered up to them? If so, I am guessing the tones are in front of the blend. (I don't know how else you would do it) If so, the middle lugs on the tone pots are your hots from the pickups. The black from the jack is your ground.

Usually the hots on pickups are white. So my guess is:

So it would be the pickup white 1 to tone 1 wire. pickup white 2 to tone 2 wire. PU yellows to back of pots (common ground) Black jack to common ground to bridge.

The only thing that has me rattled is the black wire from the second tone pot. I would have expected it to be white also.

OK - I see. There is a tone control for each pup. They feed a blend pot and then a master volume.

The loose black wire from the jack should go to a common ground point, along with the grounds from your pups and the bridge.

I can't see the terminals on the tone pots, but I think that the hot wires from the pups should go to the tone pots - maybe one each to the short black and white wires on the tone pots.

Good Luck!

It's hard to make out, but it looks like the two tones are in parallel, then feed the blend pot, which leads to the master volume.

In that case:

1) The black wire on the output jack is ground: probably for soldering to the bridge ground and/or the shield leads from the pickups.

2) The white and black wires from the tone pots would be soldered to the hot's of each pickup.

So the signal flow goes:

Code:
Bridge Pickup Hot -> Tone -> Blend -> Master Volume -> Output
                           ^
Neck Pickup Hot -> Tone ---|

Just be sure to test to see which PU lead is intended for which position so that the blend isn't backwards. I believe it would be the "white" lead is bridge, but I am not certain which of the two pots on the concentric pot is "inverted."
