Which pickup would you consider to have the most growl?

I need the most growl i can get, but also with clarity. I am thinking of replacing my MIA jazz pickups with Nordsrand. I also considered DiMarzio too hot for jazz or Lindy Fralin. Would anyone like to share their experience or opinion?

60's jazz by fender were my favs...but if you want serious mojo, go Darkstars - but that would require moding your bass...

I'm not ready to operate yet. I'm talking drop in! The 60's jazz sounds good though. Aren't vintage sounds bass heavy and dark with less brightness?

I need a pickup that has guts and plenty of harmonic overtones. I know there are other factors that determine deep bass, clear highs, and gutsey sounds. But if i can find a pickup that meets all these requirements I don't care how much it costs. I'll put them in all my basses!

You might think about getting on the phone and calling Lindy Fralin for his recommendations. You can get his phone # from his website.

I love the Fralin's in my fretless...

...they speak exceptionally well and have very crisp harmonics coverage.

I love the tone so much that I dropped Fralin's in my fretted as well.

After researching and listening to soundbites Fralin or nordstrand seams to be most likely what i want. The Ultrajazz doesn't quite get me there. What are q-tuners?

I would go for Nordstrands or SD for growl. Q-tuners are nice for clean but not for growl IMHO

DiMarzio dp123

I have DiMarzios DP123 in my Jazz Bass, best growling sound I have heard, hot but not too hot, much warmer then Ultra Jazz, actualy You may need to roll down bass a bit, as it`s probabbly the bassiest pickup I`ve heard. They are humbucking and can be wired series/parallel switchable also. If You do that You can get some very usefull bridge pickup only sounds with no hum.
I have never tried Fralins, I have heard they`re great, but it`s just good old school fender pickup, built as they were built long ago. I think that new pickup models are much more all-round players.

I have Fralin's noiseless Split-Jazz, and they growl like crazy. They also have lots of clarity, and a nice heavy low end. I think you'd like them.

Basslines Vintage in the neck, and Basslines Hot in the bridge.

Haven't needed anymore growl.

I hope i have the same idea as everyone else of what growl is. To me growl means the overtones that make a cool, thick almost doubling of the original tone sounding like a subtile blend of tones makin one sound, similar to the tone of a finely tuned multi cylinder automobile engine. Anyway when i say growl i don't want you to get that confused with distortion. Distortion can get growly also. I still want a clear sound with overtones. Just wanted to clarify for my own understanding of the word. Does everyone agree?

From what i've heard i thinl i'll go with nordys. I don't want it too airy, or too dark, with a little old school on the side. Nordstrand is my choice. Thanks for the help!
