Pickups for a 5-string j-bass build?

Sign in to disble this ad
I’m considering a 5-string jazz bass build. I don’t have the money or inclination to try out a bunch of different pickups, so I was hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here with regard to pickup selection...?

A little background may be in order: I’ve liked jazz basses since I started playing bass (1971) for their aesthetics and ergonomics, but not necessarily their sound. That being said, I have a buddy who was using SD Hot Stack for Jazz Bass pups back in the early 90’s; I liked them so I bought a set and have had them in a couple of different j-basses over the years. Ultimately, I’d like to build a passive 5-string that sounds comparable to my current j-bass (mid-80’s MIJ Squier, alder/rosewood w/SD Hot Stacks), but apparently SD doesn’t make the Hot Stack configuration in a 5-string jazz pickup.

So my question(s) are: Does anyone make a pickup similar to the SD Hot Stack for a 5-string?

There seems to a lot of interest on TB regarding the Nordstram pickups; are there any models comparable to the SD Hot Stack for Jazz Bass?

I would consider going active with a simple preamp like the Aguilar OBP-1 (I’ve tried the standalone version and liked it well enough). If I were to go that route, whose pickups work well with the Aggie?

Thanks in advance.

Where do you buy these from? Checked them out and the only US distributor seems to be like a wholesaler for companies. You can't order or see the prices unless you register as a business.

i really like what Brian Barrett did with the slim dual coil humbuckers. I think they are the same size as the bartolini x5 shape. After hearing these on a 5 string, I will never go back to conventional J pups.

Come on Roy, You don't need a 5 string J bass. It would be too manly compared to
your normal MM5 dogbreath.

You coming to the jam tonight? May see you there.

John
