Pickups for active/passive pre

If you want to have an active / passive bass, do you need special pickups for the active passive pre?

How does that work?

No. MOST basses wtih active electronics are using passive PUPs feeding into an active pre-amp afterwards. Music Man, Lakland, Fender, etc. are all that set up.
