Pickups on an Angle

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Peavey T-20 and am thinking about replacing the pickup with something else.

When I removed the pick guard to see how big of a rout was there, I was very surprised... from looking at the top, I had always thought it was a tiny pickup on a mounting ring, but it seems I've got a lotta room to play with here.

So my question is, if I put another pickup in there and leave it at the angle, what does this do to the tone?

If you angle it so the the bass E&S string side is closer to the bridge. You'll get slightly more articulate lows without any undesireable treble boost to treble side. Opposite, is you get more trebly treble strings and bassy bass strings if its angled so the D&G string side is closer to the bridge. Its not a big diff between the two. Just small little tweak. Between the two Id go with E&A string side closer to the bridge. On instruments whose staggered (P) or angled J pup is the latter, I raise the pole peices for E&A side a bit more then the D&G string ones. Then adjust overall pup height to compensate for that. Cause normally raised pole peices add little more articulation or crunch and a little bit of treble rise. By lowering the pole peices on treble D&G strings theres no treble boost. If smoother less crunchy tone is wanted, lowering pole peices just below the top of pup often works a little bit for such. Bassically when you slant a J pup it gives the little tonal tweak you have from P pups 2 peice section where one is closer to the bridge then the other.
