I have one. I like it a lot. I don't know what would fit in that cutout without surgery, or what would actually be an upgrade. It's a pretty nice pickup as is.

One thing I do plan for mine is to rewire the thing so that I have a functional traditional tone control. Like every other one I've seen, mine does almost nothing.

I've also thought of mounting a second pickup closer to the neck. Maybe a Bill Lawrence J45 and a selector switch. I wish that pickup had been mounted a little closer to the neck. Otherwise I don't know if a simple pickup change will accomplish all that much unless it's some radically different sounding one.

i have seen some folks on here put darkstars on the artcore. I wonder how the fit and difficulty of installation is?

One of the TBrs, Rodent I believe, has modded at least one Artcore with a Darkstar and did a beautiful job. It's in here somewhere with pictures but my search abilities are poor on this forum.

From all reports, it's a great sound, totally different from the Stingrayish sound of the stock Artcore.

I've got mine strung with T.I. flats and love the sound and playability but I would like just a touch more bottom end without having to use amp eq boost to get it. And that silly tone control. What was Ibanez thinking?

When I get around to modding mine I'll for sure post a report. It's not on my list of priorities but I'll eventually get to it. But if anyone else here does any mods on theirs I'd like to hear about it.

I don't think the Darkstar is the sound I'm looking for. I'm more into a warm sound for this bass. And it has to be noise free. The stock pickup is but I don't know how noisy the single coil Darkstar is. I hear they're pretty good in that regard.

The Artcore is a very nice bass despite its flaws. Great quality. Beautiful finish and flawless fret work. It's too bad Ibanez dropped it and now only has a short scale model.

i love mine for sure. and EVERYONE wants to have a look at gigs. i love playing it with a pick and a chorus effect when i am playing alone. i havent found a use for that effect in an original song yet.
