are pickups directional? do they have to go one way?

I'm wondering if it matters which way a pickup is rotated e.g if the E string string will this affect the tone?

I ask because i recently took the pickups out of one of my jazz basses and since dong so the bring pickup has been excessively burpy and clipping the amp, it could be too close to the strings but it doesn't look too close and it's matching the neck pickup in volume nicely. could pickup rotation affect tone like this?
