Pickups Going Bad???

Sign in to disble this ad
Over the last couple months I have noticed that my G string seems to be softer than my other strings. For the last couple weeks it seems my D string has become softer as well. I haven't changed anything - except strings a while back - set up wise. The neck and action are fine, intonation i sfine, etc.

Can/do pickups go bad a string at a time?

What kind of pickup is it? If it's a Precision style pickup, the height of one half of the pickup may be too low compared the other half. Conversely, the E-A side may have gotten too high.

They are Bartolini jazz style pups. The height hasn't been changed.

Try a new battery if you haven't already. Check preamp connections while you're at it, something may have come loose. Sounds strange.

The battery is fresh, but I didn't look at any connections in the preamp, although it seems odd that only the G and D strings are at issue - at least I haven't really noticed any other strings. The G has been like this for a while - even after fresh strings.

Spoke with Cynthia at Yamaha today and a new saddle assembly is on th eway. Had to get the whole thing to get the screw I needed but $10 is better than a new bass.

I'm going to do a new battery, new strings and double check the set up after I get the part. That should take care of all the variables and hopefully it will be back to it's old self.
