Pickups For Graphite Neck?

Sign in to disble this ad
Are there special considerations for graphite necks with pickup selection? Graphite neck finally hooked me, custom bass is being started!

I really like the strong textural sound of the passive warwicks. Never owned one though. The bart soap bars have been my favorite pickups I have owned. Barts have good clarity and dont get boxy sound like most other stuff! Warm is good clank is bad.

However, if I start tapping or slapping I have to reEQ. Is there a pickup style that will retain output and consistency for lots of techniques?

Those lace pickups seem pretty fancy any input TB?

I couldn't tell if you already decided on soapbar sized p/u's or not. There are a lot of good options. Bartolini's have a smooth way about them, but in a carbon fiber necked bass (Modulus, Zon,...), which already have a mid-neutral character, something with a bit more mid growl may be in order....it really depends on what you're after in tone. In my Modulus Vintage Jazz, I have Nordstrand NJ4SE's and they fit that bass very well..........

My custom made 5 string jazz has bartolini classic series pickups and a moses 5 string 35 scale neck. If you're interested in soundclips of one of my jam bands live recordings let me know, so you can get an idea of how they sound... They have a nice growl to them...

I have not decided on pickup configuartions at all! Or preamps for that matter.

I would love to hear those sound clips. How should I contact you?

My biggest concern is having consistent levels across a myriad of techniques. I am currently playing on a gt7 and finding a good tone across the fretboard is not always available. Two guitar player buddies seem to think most of my EQ issues could be addressed with a fancy compresor.

I played on a passive G&L with a very warm P that drove me crazy, completely upending my belligerent stance opposing P basses!

Thanks for sharing your expeirence with the J, very insightful!

Speaking of G&Ls... I'm just getting started on a project with a 35" Moses neck and a set of G&L MFD pickups from an L2500. The body will be Ash/Wenge/Burl Maple (most likely - it's what I have).

I LOVE my L2500 and have thought for a while just how great it could be with a Moses neck. I found a killer deal on this neck (24 frets, plus an extension to 27 on the D/G strings) and found a good deal on a set of MFDs, so...

Of course, these things take time, so I don't know if I'll be done before you need to decide.
