Pickups hum like crazy

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got a copy jazz bass from a talkbass member and the bass is nice and sounds good but the pickups hum like crazy. I don't know much about wiring and electronics in general so I have no idea how to fix it. When I turn the pickup volumes to the max the hum gets as loud as my playing The strange part is that if I turn the bass to a certain angle then the hum goes away significantly and isn't much of a problem but when turned just a couple degrees from that spot, the hum comes back in full force.

What's the problem and is there a way that I can fix it myself without going to a luthier?

My bass does this too. Very weird. You change the angle and it stops. The thing that causes it on my bass is the treble knob. If I turn it down the hum goes away. It's probably because mine's active.

Is yours active?

When I'm far enough from the amp it stops, so I don't have to worry about it during gigs, just at home.

Sounds like feedback for yours.

As for the OP, I'm not certain. If the situation is the same (where you're close to your amp and not muting your strings), it could also be feedback.
