Pickups installed backwards?

Is it possible to get pickups mixed up and accidentally install them backwards and if so, what would happen?

Do you mean installing the pickup rotated around 180 degrees, or mixing up neck and bridge pickups?

If you flip a pickup around 180 degrees, as long as the pole pieces are not staggered, it wont matter.

As far as swapping neck and bridge pickups:

If its a Jazz bass, the bridge pickup is wider than the neck.
I am not sure if the same is true of other pickup types.

The bridge pickup is usually hotter than the neck to compensate for the string volume being lower from the bridge.
So the neck pickup would be really strong, while the bridge pickup would be weak.

Hi.

Yes, a bit more information is needed to determine if it has a impact on sound or not.

Mixing different pickups that are in close proximity to eachother will have to have the magnetic polarities aligned so the interference is at minimum. That can also be used as an advantage if it's desireable to do so.

Sam
