Pickups for a Jazz Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently made a major shift in bands. Going from folk/punk (Beck) to rock (Incubus/Deftones). Now, my jazz bass doesn't seem to be cutting it. The previous bassist left his bass in studio. He has a MIA Precision Deluxe with Bartolini pickups(don't know model). Now, obvious answer would be to buy a new bass but I prefer not to give up my jazz as I really like the way it plays/feels so I am wondering if there is anything that can be done to give me a similar tone/output. I have read good reviews about the Model J's? Bartolin 9J's?

Any advice?

I'm a Bill Lawrence J45 fan...they are incredible pups.

Hey man, NJ here as well. I have a jazz that I use for a project very similar to what you're talking about. I think it seems to work pretty good and has a nice growl to it. Maybe tweaking the amp could be a solution? I've also read many times on the forum that simply switching the pick-ups isn't really going to make a huge difference in the J-Bass. It kinda is what it is. In fact, I seem to recall a thread exactly like this where someone tried everything possible to make their Jazz bass sound different. Honestly, at that point if you want a different sound, a different bass is probably the answer. I do think you can be very happy with the J-bass.

Thats what I was afraid of. Perhaps a trade is in the near future. The previous guys bass sounds really sweet and plays really nice (don't tell him I have used it!)

Don't give up your bass just yet. Pickups can change the flavor or your bass, but my advise is to take your jazz to the nearest quality music store and try out some preamp pedals. A Sadowsky, Aguilar, or Fodera preamp pedal can do alot to sculpt your tone, without a major overhaul or selling your bass. If you find a pedal that you like, you can always have the onboard version hardwired to your bass. Just a thought.
