Pickups for my new Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass 70s

Kay.

So, i need to replace my pups for SVM JB 70s.. I need some vintage sound, so i guess i dont want basslines (they're like hi-low thingy eh?) and.. i was thinking to get a set of lindy fralin, or dimarzio ultrajazz.. how are they? cause this bass came with soft maple for the body, so i need somewhat clear tones.. it'll get badass II on tues (got from ebay aus for 112 ) and.. yeah.

sorry for the bad english though.

ah.. ic. i really like to get marcus miller's sound.. i know i do sound so naive though, but a japanese fender marcus miller sig will cost me about $2000 Australian.. which is not worth it

Im thinking to get an obp2 aguilar preamp too. Not sure if i like the sound. >_>

I once owned a SVM J and would like to comment that for the tone that you seek, the p'ups that are stock would actually suffice. I have heard someone get the tone pretty close using those very same p'ups and an East J-Retro preamp. REALLY TASTY! You couldn't go wrong w/either brand of p'ups (D'marzio+J-retro= ULTRASWEET and super close to MM tone IMHO), but seeing as money is an issue (or you wouldn't really be modding a Squier would you?) I would say focus on a good preamp for now. Unfortunately the J-retro may cost as much as the bass! Don't be afraid to try outboard pre's as well; may score a used one for cheap!

ps. I would not advise the Audere pre in this case. Excellent preamp. Really clean and articulate, just not the one for the Marcus tone. Kicks butt in all other catagories though!!!!!

Hm.. i wouldnt mind doing that, but it might took me awhile to get the j retro preamp..

i dont like Audere, as they sound so modern IMO. I really like marcus miller's tone at 90s.. (esp at Live & More concert.. ) i think that's the tone that a jazzbass should sounds like.

so.. j retro eh? well, the preamp itself cant beat the price i paid for the bass.. 480$ AU. that's still around $400 US.

I use this bass with an old Sadowsky outboard preamp. I replaced the pickups with 1/4 pounders and the bridge with a schaller. I can pretty much nail the Marcus sound now.
