Smile Which pickups? (n00b question)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

I just got an Ibanez BTB405QM TK three days ago and I'm really enjoying playing it. It is my first bass (I play 7-String guitars primarily so I'm no stranger to the low end! ) but although the sounds I'm getting are OK I'm looking for some way of getting the tone that Marco Coti Zelati from Lacuna Coil has on their KarmaCode album. A good example is on the song "What I See". Maybe a better way is to describe it as being similar to Feildy from KoRn's tone. I'm also a big fan of the bass tone from the very start of Strapping Young Lad's "Rainy Season" and Christian Olde Wolbers' distorted tone on the Fear Factory records but maybe something with a little more "grind" to it? All in all I'm looking for those tones but also some versatility would be important.

So what should I get to upgrade from the stock pickups?

Thanks.

(P.S. I know nothing about changing bass pickups or their wiring or anything so go easy! )

distortion

YOu will not get the distortion from your pickups, but from your signal processors or your amp. The treasure you seek is therein. Checkout some bass pods or stomp boxes.

Cool. Thanks. But how do I get the clicky, percussive sound?

No idea what to suggest tonally, but measure the pickups, and check which shape they are from the link, so people have an idea what might at least fit.

Ok it seems to be 110mm X 32mm. That could be a Bartolini P2 as it matches the dimensions and both the P2 and stock pickups have the 2/1 screw setup. Does that help?

Detuned (down a whole step or more), light or medium gauge strings, and an EQ with scooped mids.
