Pickups for a new 70s style Jazz bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Good Evening TB, I'm putting together a 70s style jazz bass. It includes a swamp ash body and RW fingerboard. The pickup placement is in the 70s position. I want an authentic 70s sounding jazz bass (clean, punchy, deep and hifi) but with a huge sound. I've been looking at the NJ4 70's wind, Big Singles Soapbars and the Fat Stacks. In addition I will be adding a preamp of sorts. Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas.
I've tried the search but it didn't give me the answers I was looking for
Thanks

Lindy Fralin Split Jazz. Best sounding jazz pickups for the 70's position.

Really, then why don't all 70's routed j basses have them?

OP yer just gonna have to roll the dice and try something. What sounds magic in one bass can be ho hum in another. I'm gonna put Bardens in my 62 reissue. My thinking is I'm at the point where I can make anything sound good and I want the quietness of a humbucker. The fact this p.up is a true humbucker and may be fatter sounding than the originals won't bother me either. I'm also prepared to take a 30-40% hit and sell them if they really don't work for me.

My first thought is...If you want an AUTHENTIC 70īs jazz bass tone...why dont try some Fender Pickups?

Checked out the J bass discussion thread and appears that the output is quite low, I need big sounding pickups that have the same 70s tone.

Nordys and Fralins are probably the best choices for high-end pickups.

So lemme get this straight....you want the "70's sound" but...."bigger"? I'm not sure what "bigger" means to you (it's really about as descriptive as "purple") but it seems to me (and a couple of others) the obvious choice for a 70's sound is a 70's type set...maybe with a preamp onboard to pump up the output if turning yer amp up doesn't do the job. If the higher output comes from the pickup itself my experience is it's gonna sound pretty different from a lower output p.up.

maybe that pickups need to be winded at that point to get the 70īs tone, more than that will give another tone. But anyway, if you will add a preamp you have enought output, and even a medium output pickup works better cause you never will get overdrive/clip when boost w the preamp
