Pickups or Not??? Please help

Sign in to disble this ad
I currently have a 1988 Washburn Force ABT B-10 with active pickups. I have a few issues with the bass.

1. When playing the bass I get a loud popping electrical interference sound, and it is clipping any amp I plug into. I can tap the body of the bass and it makes the noise. I have checked all wires and everything seems soldered right, new battery, and the output jack as been re-soldered, but I am not sure if it is a bad pickup, or if the preamp has failed. Any ideas on how to test this??

2. I can not find a wiring diagram of this Bass any where on the net. I have emailed Washburn, but no response. Was wanting to know if anyone else has this bass and can post pictures of the wiring in the back of theirs?

I am new to the forum, and appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks

Can you post a clip of the popping sound? That would be helpful.

It could be a loose cable, or a terminal touching something it should not.

If you plug in your bass, with the control cavity lid removed... do you still have that popping sound? If you don't, then it may be that a cable is touching the shielded grounded (presumably) back of the lid momentarily.

Also, with the control cavity open and the bass plugged in, touch the cables and gently move them around to see if you can generate a pop that way (turn the volume of your amp just enough to hear that, no need to wake up the neighbours ;-). If you get pops that way then you have to check the connections systematically. It's easy for two cables to touch when the lid is closed if it's a busy circuitry. Maybe a cable is loose but not obvious by eye...

My first suspect is always the battery cable, and the terminal itself, which sometimes can be loose and a battery that sometimes breaks contact and then restores it will produce a popping sound.
It could be a connection in the preamp itself.

But I'd check the battery cable and the actual connector. They are the ones more likely to fail.

You said the output jack was resoldered... was that before or after you had this issue? At any rate, check that as you tightened the socket, it didn't turn so that a terminal could touch the shield or another terminal/cable. I've had issues with that too in the past. Depending on the type of socket, sometimes it's not obvious until you put a jack in it.

How did you find this problem? Did it happen overnight? Did you change anything in the electronics prior to that? Did it suffer a fall?

If the bass produces a normal sound (apart from the pops) I don't think the pickups will be bad. You seem to have checked things already, so I figure what I asked above will give negative results as you'd have noticed... but I have to ask, just in case.

Now that you mention the battery cable does have tape that is coming off of it, but i didn't even think of it possibly disconnecting or making/not making contact (I know I know... dumb of me) This happened while I was at practice actually. It was working fine for about an hour or so, and then out of the blue it started making this noise. I do believe the output jack was replaced by previous owner. When I pulled the jack out the wires were twisted around the terminals, and the ground had a horrible solder job done to it.

also, one of the cables from the preamp is not connected, (my actives are not working???) and I am not sure where the he** that thing is suppose to connect to. That is the reason I was wanting to know if anyone has a picture of the inside of theirs.

I will check the battery cable though and let you know if it was that. I can only hope it is something that easy. Nice to have a second opinion on this.

OK so I fixed the noise by replacing the battery connector. Good call... I have another issue though.

Now when I have a battery plugged in the pickups don't work at all. Plus when I pull the active knob it turns my pickups on, but when pushed back down... I get no sound. I get the feeling it is the way that the switch is wired.

Once again if anyone has a picture of the internal working of the Washburn force b-10 that would be awesome. If not I will start rewiring the switch.
