Question pickups for Peavey Grind

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guy's,

I just picked up an old Peavey grind 6 string.Perfect condition,
and for 60.00 bucks you can't go wrong for a spare bass.
Anyway ,the pickups I feel need to be replaced.Bass lacks tonal range. To boomy or two bright no real middle ground.
Any ideas on replacements?I use a Phil Jones system which
can make any bass sound great ,but the peavey has been a
challenge.

Thanks,
Jeff

I have two 6 string Grinds that I intend to modify as follows:

1. Grind #1 - Nordstrand Dual Coils (custom wound) or Bartolini M56CBC pickups with Bartolini 3-band pre amp. I'm leaning toward the Nordstrands here but only because I have a Modulus Quantum 6 that I'm going to outfit with the M56CBC pickups.

2. Grind #2 - EMG 45J (or the newer 45JX) pickups with an 18 volt 3-band EMG BQC preamp.

I have higher end basses and expect the Grinds to hold their own once modded. These are some nice basses that I feel are worthy of electronic upgrades. Thanks

I meant to mention that EMG makes several variations of the EMG 45-shaped pickups that will drop right into the Grind. I chose the 45J pickups because I don't currently have any basses with a Jazz pickup configuration and I think that EMG "J" sound will be killer in the Grind. However, I've known some others to go with the EMG 45CS models and loved it. Despite what brand pickup you choose, you are looking for an EMG 45-shaped pickup that can accomodate somewhat narrow string spacing on the Grind.

I also have the Grind 6 and I'm deciding on whether to put in EMG J's or Bartolini's...with the Bartolini's is it absolutely necessary to get the pre amp??

mine also sounded pretty dull. i could never get any ACTUAL grind out of it. unfitting name. lame mids, dull highs, no real gain to speak of.
