Pickups/Preamp suggestions for my new Stambaugh

Sign in to disble this ad
Greetings all,

I am getting close to having all the details worked out with Chris for a custom based loosely on my old Guild bass. For more background, you can check out this thread.

In any event, one of the last hurdles is figuring out the pickups.

I originally thought of using a pair of Darkstars, but that may not be a possibility for a number of reasons.

So I am looking for suggestions. My band (and I personally) cover a lot of ground in terms of our music, though broadly it could be considered rock.

As for my tone, I like a very warm/vintage tone with growling lows and very clean, almost glassy highs, but not so modern as to sound sterile.

Chris is recommending "vintage" Aeros, but I'm not sure. My first thought was an Audere pre with Nordie Dual Coils.

If I do use the Aeros, I will definitely get a Passive/Active switch, but what pre would be best? The Aggie?

Any thoughts?

Aeros+OBP-3

I have Aeros w/an OBP-3 in my Stambaugh 6. I was very into the classic P-bass tone when I commissioned it, & Chris' recommendations really delivered. Don't hold your breath, but I'll see if I can do some soundclips. My playing won't impress anyone, but the bass' tone might...
BTW, I also had a passive tone knob added- essential, IMO, if you want your passive mode to be anything more than a gig saver when your battery dies.

All that said, I'm currently waiting on a fretless 6(another Stammie )which will be totally passive w/Barts.

That pre-amp definitely has me interested.

How well would it work with a pair of "vintage" Aeros as Chris has suggested?

And if you don't mind me asking, how much would it cost?

Hi
You can get more details at

www.acguitars.co.uk/news.php

I don't have any experience with Aero's so I can't give you an honest answer I will try and find out. I have one of my own pickups wound with Alnico magnets for a vintage type sound which works very well with the pre-amp. You could PM Basse he has the pre-amp in one of my basses and has a good collection of other basses with various pickups he may be able to help you regarding the Aero's.
