Pickups replacement for Hohner/Spirit

Sign in to disble this ad
As in the topic, I'm the happy owner of a cheap Spirit bass, which I'd love to upgrade with a half decent electronics (yes, Select pickups aren't exactly first class pickups)
Any idea anyone ?
Thank you

Just sell it, and get a good bass

If J's, upgrade to EMG Hz's, or DiMarzio J' or Ultrajazz.

If 'Buckers, again EMG does an active set, or look for Bill Lawrence 'buckers.

The obvious choice is EMG active (EMG BTC, EMG 35DC, ENG 35CS). Its a quite expensive upgrade though, and not just a straight pickup replacement (battery compartment? your bass looks passive).

Search back a ways on TB and you'll find several threads where I've posted about different pickups and electronics combinations for Spirits that I've tested out. Also, other owners have posted as well.

There are also some good threads covering bass humbuckers from Schaller and Rio Grande.

The XZ's were more popular back in the days when they were being produced still, and sold by MusicYo, now defunct. The threads go all the way back to 2000 or so. I still have all three of mine, pictured in my TB avatar/icon above, and I still like them- a lot.

Edit: In looking back through several of these threads, I saw where you'd posted last week in the the megathread.

Before and after comma errors. There's nothing "bad" about them.

You have a Hohner bass, not the original Steinberger, true, but I believe what's on this page could help you a lot as the instrument series are very close together:

They have some really sensible ideas there. Might want to check them out. Other than that, you can always go passive, rip the electronics out and go for whichever pickup can fit in.

I have a 5 string version (from music yo days), and I put an EMG35 CS in the neck and an EMG35 DC in the bridge. No routing, but i did need to use my dremel to sand the ears in the corners where the original pickup plates mounted.

Good Luck!
