Are pickups reversible?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm a lefty, and I was thinking of buying an SX 75 Jazz, and popping in some Fender 75 RI pickups. Would it matter if they came from a RIGHTY bass and went into a LEFTY one? I don't know jack about pickups other than they're essentially magnets, so any advice would be appreciated.

There is no left or right to jazz pickups.

Hey Stew... yes you can change the polarity on almost any mass-produced pickup.. that being said however, in your particular case the stock pickups will work equally well regards of the player's orientation.. Nothing to change.

I thought you intended to feed a signal into the pups to make the strings vibrate...

Except in the southern hemisphere.... where they need to be installed upside down....

haha thanks for the info guys. I wasn't sure if there were magnets with different powers (or anything) corresponding to the size of each string or something technical like that.

Jazz bass pickups (at least all of them that i have seen) have pole pieces of equal height, so thus, their orientation shouldnt be an issue.

If you have a pickup with staggered pole pieces (a Stratocaster's pickup for instance), you would want to keep them oriented correctly.

For the most part, the orientation of J pickups shouldn't matter. There may be a few custom models which tweak the response for certain strings (like the B string).... but that would be a very rare case. I seem to recall Dingwall making some special modifications.
