What do you wish was different about the pickups that came with it?

Try the Sadowsky single coils or the Nordstrand NJ5 (they are fatter).

Sad singles. Not speaking from a vast wealth of knowledge, but that would be where I would start looking. Just seems right.

The size is not the same as the Fender 5, so you have to be careful.

No, you are not obliged to Sadowsky (for matter of size anyway). Nordstrand NJ5 and Seymour Duncan Sj5-70/74 are the correct size. I'm sure other manufacturers also do it.

I suggest to contact Brian at http://www.bestbassgear.com/, he'll fix you up.

I was thinking of putting Fralins in my UV70-5. I haven't measured anything but I just found out Fralins are 3.95"/4.10" but Sadowsky uses 3.73"/3.73"

Anyone know for sure?

The Sadowsky single coils sound wonderful with that wood combination IMO, and will be an exact fit. They are made by Seymour Duncan... very punchy and aggressive. There are Nordstand singles that fit the Sadowsky also, and they sound very nice too... a bit warmer and a touch darker than the Sadowsky pickups. I assume if you contact Carey Nordstand, he would tell you which model is sized and voiced for the Sadowksy bass.

I would go with the Sadowsky singles myself. I love them myself. The bass will still sound much more like a Sadowsky than a Fender, but it will be warmer, punchier and more grindy up top than the more hi fi sizzle of the stock HC's.

IMO and IME!

The only Fralins I've seen up close were on a Lakland Joe Osborn ans yes, they were "Fender-size" - larger than Sadowsky size. But Lindy Fralin will probably make you a custom pickup that would fit on a Sadowsky.

If I'm not mistaken, the M5V is a Lull. Sadowsky's is an MV5.
I know, big woop. ...just sayin'.
