pickups in series

Ever play a 2 pickup bass with full volume on both? How about wiring both pickups in series direct to tone pot or input jack? gives the bass a hotter output and more aggressive sound? Can humbuckers and single coil pups be wired in series w/o harm?

i always play with 2 both volume full. i'm not used to it. well so far, i've got no problem at all. it has balanced low n high from neck pup n sweet middle that makes the sound fuller from birdge pup.

to have series conf, just connect bridge pup's ground cable to hot cable from neck pup. so hot cable from bridge pup will be a common hot cable for your bass n so is ground cable from neck pup, will be a common ground cable. next, solder the hot cable to the middle of volume potentio n ground cable to the right one. next, solder the left one to capacitor (usually 0.05uF ceramic caps). then solder that cap to the middle of tone potentio n ground the right one. the output is taken from capacitor to tone potentio voltage. maybe u find this confusing, u'd better find the schematic for series conf.

series conf will give you hotter output but less high. it's used to use in humbucker pup from one coil to another coil. i don't recommend you to mix j pup with humbucker. i don't know the reason, just not sure about that. maybe becaus it'll make a 3 coil in series conf. hope it helps.

I had a 2004 MIA Jazz bass with S-1 pickup switch. It allowed for standard Parrallel or Series. I preferred the series as I liked the fatter tone (sort of like a P bass).
To answer your question about wireing humbuckers and single coils in series:
No it will not harm anyting, however I tried it and found it less than satisfying as the overall tonal response was degradated in my opinion. For that reason I do not recommend doing it but you are welcome to try...hey it's free.

i have an SX jazz with a model J (neck) wired in series with the SX bridge PU straight to the jack. it rocks just fine. very midrangy, like a P but with better clarity in the high range. i did/do not experience any issues with this config. did i mention it rocks just fine?
