I'd try adjusting your amps EQ or changing the height of the pickups

When you say you tried adjusting it. What exactly did you adjust?

i tried adjusting the pickups. i just cant seem to get a fat, even sound with both pickups wide open. they dont seem to have all that much bottom passive. i used to hook it up to an audere preamp on another bass and it killed!!! I wanted to make it passive because i have 2 active 5-string basses already and i need a bass for Rock and old R&B cover tunes. i havent played my Highway One in a long time beacause it was a project bass i was having ground noise problems with but i finally got it right. The string tension seems to be looser then i remember though, i do tune a half-step down on my basses though. could that be the problem????

Sounds like you need Dimarzio model J's with adjustable pole pieces.
Blades or fixed poles offer no string to string tweaking.
