Piezo Buffers

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys ive got a quick question for any of you in the know about piezo setups. I plan on running a piezo setup in a bass im building soon and was wondering what options are out there as far as buffers (onboard only). I know of graphtech and bartolini but im sure there are more options. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

the fishman powerchip does the job as well, mixing the piezo and magnetic signals in mono or splitting them out in stereo. they sell it for guitar, but i think it should serve for bass, too.

What I'm doing for a project that will be piezo only, I have disassembled a buffer for an acoustic and just using the board and battery case. I will remove the volume and bass slider pots and wire a conventional stacked pot to the board. the treble and mid sliders will be preset and closed up inside the control cavity. I already have the buffer taken apart. and tested.

I am using this buffer: OPUS-III 3 Bands Acoustic Guitar Preamp EQ Tuner Piezo on eBay.ca (item 170622524600 end time 30-Apr-11 10:33:12 EDT)

and this p'up: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ACOUSTIC-BASS-GUI...ht_1078wt_1141

The system tests out good and I really dig the p'up. I have seen the buffer used in quality acoustic six strings and it works great so far.

i have an experience with RMC, with their "Bass Excelence" sensor saddles, and their hybrid preamp (to blend magnetic pups and piezo). i use it for a hollow bass. the pre-amp board didn't work properly after a year and half (not sure what was the reason), and i had to buy another one (not so cheap, though they did gave me a 20% discount on it).

as for the sound - it is Good and can copy a double bass sound if you wish. however, it doesn't transend the sound of the instrument when the instrument is played acousticly (the sound of the instrument played acousticly is great). the piezo gives it a different sound. i don't know a piezo which stays close to the original sound.

another issue is that my bass is battery dependent, because the magnetic pups are dependent of the batteried preamp, even though the bass is not active.

the sound is good, though i use only the piezo sound from my bass with a singer/song writer Jazz/Folk acoustic gigs. for world music and melodic stuff i use more the magnetics with just a little-bit of the piezo boost for bass boost (i forgot to mention that this piezo can be very loud).

hope that helps.

Check out Carvin preamp.

I have this on my Carvin and I prefer the piezo sound by a very large margin than the sound of my other Graphtech preamp.

Made for Graphtech saddle , plug and play.

The Bartolini preamps are intended for use with magnetic pickups. Piezo pickups have very different characteristics (higher impedance) and should be installed with preamps specifically built to work with them; otherwise pickup loading will be incorrect and tone will suffer.
