PJ pop and hum

Sign in to disble this ad
ok guys, I've been searching through a ton of threads on here trying to track down a way to get rid of this problem and I thought its time to start a thread.

Bass: SX PJ
Pickups: Quarter Pound P, Quarter Pound Jazz
Wiring: V, V, no tone, jack

1. I have a hum from the jazz pickup on my SX PJ. It hums not only when the jazz is solo'd, which I would expect, but it also introduces a hum when I roll it up in volume when the P is up all the way. I did'nt have this problem when I was running the quarter pounder with the stock SX jazz.

2. I also have an itermittant POP when I move the bass around. or shake it.

I just put it in new pots. and double checked the wiring diagram..... same problems

any thoughts?

The J is a single coil and the P is a split coil, so together, that's two coils to cancel out 60Hz hum, then one more to introduce it again. This is perfectly normal.

bummer... wondering why I did'nt have this issue with the stock SX Jazz p'up? possible that the QP jazz with higher output and wider freq response makes it more prominant?

Is the only alternative to cancel hum somthing like a Dimarzio Ultra Jazz?

Was the stock pickup a humbucker?

Does this hum go away at all with any volume setting? If not, it could be a ground problem. Is the bridge grounded to all the other grounds? If not, try Star grounding ( all grounds come to one point) is what I use and seems to work best.

yes... the hum disappears as soon as I roll off the J pickup. I dont think the stock pickup was humbucking. It was the cheapo stock SX pickup.

Any thoughts on the popping sound? could it be the shielding coming unstuck?
