PJ or regular Js?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a nice ESP J neck that I'm going to build up into a new bass, and I'm wondering if I should go with a PJ pickup setup or regular Js? If I can really get both a decent old-style P sound along with a decent J sound, I'd love it - anybody got experience with that style of pickup setup?

FWIW:

I've got a '65 Fender P track that I've nailed the tone with J pups before so definitely not an issue in a mix - depending on the J pups - and other the other variables in the mix.

In my experience J pups are hands down the way to go for optimizing tone variation from pup swaps - there's just way more available to try. If I had to be stuck with routes and a single bass, in would be J's. But to be honest, I've yet to find a P pup I really would keep to play.

+1 I also prefer a jazz configuration with pickups that have a little "P" in their voicing, or aided by EQ. Blending becomes more uniform, and IMHO the slap sound is unbeatable.
