Any type of pickup can be "punchy" if you define pushed, mix-cutting low-midrange "punchy."
Are the stock pickups truly lacking? IME, SX pickups have sounded incredibly good for the price, and are extremely hot and punchy. Many SX owners are content with their stock pickups.
Have you tried changing strings or playing with the settings on your amp to find the sound you desire?
