PJ tone buzz

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Peavey Foundation S (PJ), I am playing it through a new amp and it is humming bad. The only way to get rid of the hum is to turn down the tone, which sucks. the Foundations were shielded at the factory so dont think that is it. The tone knob is not grounded by the way. dont know if that matters but that is what the schematic shows as well.

Do I need to get noise canceling pups? Would I need to replace both P&Js or just the Js.

I like the pups (stock) but I play in church and I have to get this hum out. Any suggestions on maybe replacing those?

The J gives that problem. My P/J gets no noise when in P mode, but turn the J on and it sucks big time! XD

Is there anything other than replacing the pups?

You can try shielding with copper foil around the pickups. Sometimes factory shielding paint doesn't always do the best job. Also make sure that there is something connecting the bridge pickup cavity to the shielding of the control cavity. Single coils are always going to hum, but you can reduce it to some extent.
