pj volume issues
hello fellas, im hoping someone on here can help me with something so i can bring this bass to a tech and at least have some idea with whats going on. since i believe the problem to be related to pickup wiring and/or electronics, i stuck it in this forum
I recently put together a mutt...its a rosewood pbass neck on an agathis jazz body (the pocket in the body is pretty shallow, the neck heel was pretty high...but i find that it actually works well with the bridge) with a badass II bridge and a lindy fralin split coil pbass pickup and a nordstrand nj4se bridge pickup. i know, it doesnt sound very economic but i just had a bunch of parts laying around and nothing to put the pickups in so i went for it. and im happy with the results. sometimes that is......
the problem is that there are some major volume issues, especially when compared to my jack casady hollowbody. i usually have my amp at a 2 or 3 on the volume, which is plenty loud for the JC. BUT when i plug in the PJ, sometimes ill have to crank to 6 or 7 for there to even be a comparable level of volume. and thats at best...sometimes its so quiet i can crank my volume all the way (and its an ampeg svt cl) and still be able to play at a moderately comfortable volume.
the strange thing is that this problem is also inconsistent. sometimes i can unplug it and that fixes the issue somewhat. it also reacts differently to my OD...its always too loud (despite the volume drop), where with my current setting its perfect with the JC. i have heard that pedals, even true-bypass, can effect your signal in weird ways...dont know if thats true.
i know its absurd. i didnt wire the instrument, i brought it to guitar center for the setup. but im wondering if the pickups are out of phase (unlikely because even when the pickups are run individually, the volume is still lacking), if they mightve been wired wrong (no idea what that entails or how i would recognize that), if theres something loose (my input jack does crackle pretty often, but i dont know if that would affect my volume level) or if the pickups need to be raised (possible, since i a/b'd the pj with my friends pbass and its plently loud...i noticed his pickup was higher than mine), or if its an output issue with the pickups themselves (they probably arent well matched haha, but i though why not...if this is the case i wouldnt know how to remedy that. series/parallel switch? --i want to get one of those in there anyway...).
also, the tone is pretty awesome...recently ive gotten used to playing with flats but i put some rotosteels on. the action is very smooth (almost too smooth haha- im used to digging in) but i find that i have to dig in with this bass, but its weird...i feel like i sometimes hear my string than pickup? anyway, ill try and get soundclips and pics up.
anyway, sorry for the verbose (if not overly detailed) post. im kind of a detail freak and id like some data so i dont bring this bass back with that "doi" expression...so any input or experience with this is welcome!
