Please describe the tone of Nordy Big Singles vs. standard jazz...

The nord-web descriptions don't cut it. What's more? What's turbo?
Can someone enlighten me based on real experience?
Can the big singles truly replace standard J? or do they have their own thing? Can subtle adjustments to a pre or amp get to the same place using a standard J?
Do they lean more toward warm, or more toward rock? more like 60's or 70's?
Has anyone left J behind for big singles, considering them to be the new J?
I ask because once I cut those holes, I'm in. It's a big commitment: like them or sell the bass.

Thanks for any input.

i ab'd two basses with the same specs other than one having big singles, the other 70's singles (ash/maple, 34"scale, nord 2 band)

the big single bass was deeper and glassier. wider overall without as much grind and bite in the mids.

Not for me then.

Hmm... Glad to have read your experience with them. Wider, deeper, and glassier seems different from what I would have expected from Nordstrand's site (when I read the whole "jazz on steroids" thing, I think of a very aggressive, middy sound).

his own description to me was something to the effect of bigger and more dynamic. when he put those two things together, i could see what he was going for.

youve got to remember, how long have we been hearing "jazz on steroids" associated with sadowsky? those arent the most grindy, middy sounding basses. very clean and hifi sounding.

Agreed. I too had expected the Big Singles to be more mid focused... I have been planning a bass build using them, but now I'm rethinking it... I don't want to sound like Marcus Miller (been there, done that - used EMGs!). Nothing against Marcus, as he's pretty much my biggest influence... but the sound I hear in my head is a bit more low-mid, ya know?

When I talked to the folks at BestBassGear, they were pushing the Big Single over the Big Split or the the Fat Stacks...

Hmmmmm....
