Please help me understand and listen to the different tones these words refer to when describing J-bass sound.
Thanks!

If you want burp and growl, listen to Jaco.
Perfect tone!

I associate growl exclusively with fretless basses

My fretless makes great sounds that can't be duplicated on my fretted basses!

What helped me was to search P bass vs. J bass threads in the TB archives, and try to follow the myriads of opinions on each of the terms that you mentioned.

burp = trebly bite from the jazz bridge pickup
thump= the bassy tone from the neck pickup
growl= the high mids sound...
grind= focuses on the low mids..
bark= is where you dig in.. the snappy tone.. esp how flea digs with his jazz bass.. or players like Paul Turner of Jamiroquai

Honestly, most of these terms are subjective. Growl, for example could describe boosted mids, the roundwound sound, fretless "mwah", low gain overdrive, etc.
Don't worry about how other people describe tones, its better to figure it out yourself.

I associate it almost exclusively with the MusicMan Stingray sound. IMO, fretless basses don't really "growl" as much as they swoop (or "mwah" like fatherjohn said). Onomatopoeias are so subjective and opinion based that they're almost useless anyway. Meh...but how else are you going to describe a sound that's not a word?

I did hear a P-bass once, played thru an SVT that sounded "farty"- but in a good way.
