please help ID the mystery Jazz Bass pickup...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey All,

bought a used 1992 Jazz Bass 62RI. I had an Antiquity II on hand to put in the neck. Removed the neck pickup in the picture. Can anyone ID this mystery neck pickup?

Keen to ID the mystery neck as the bridge pickup is it's mate and I like the balance between the mystery bridge and the Antiquity II in the neck.

Apologies if this is an all too frequent thread.

Rob

Make sure you switch the hot lead on the SD to the ground.
It will be out of phase with the stock Fender if you wire it up normally...

can you post pictures of the top and without the cover. the foam and sticker looks like whats used by duncan with the antiquities and the leads dont look like a factory solder job

This is from the SD site...take it how you want...

Yes they can be but Seymour Duncan and Fender pickups are magnetically opposite. Many players find that after installing a Seymour Duncan bridge single coil into a Strat they must switch the Fender mid and neck position pick ups both in the pick guard and in the wiring at the switch to keep the #2 and #4 positions noise canceling. There are exceptions to this rule though because Fender has changed their magnetic orientation several times in the last four decades. Generally with single coil pick ups it's easier to stick with one manufacturer to avoid the trouble of trying to figure out how to get all the pickups properly phased both electrically and magnetically.

If you lose a lot of tone & volume with both P-Ups on....they are out of phase.

Iv'e done over 40 repair jobs mixing Duncan & Fender (on guitar & bass) and they have ALL been opposite...every time..100%
Been doing work like this for 30 years +
Just trying to save the guy some time.
Easy to reverse the leads if it's wrong..

BTW--are the pole-peices level with the plastic cover or do they protrude past?
By the looks of the leads the seem to be the "vintage-style" alnico 5 by Fender.

They aren't the "cloth"
leads like they started putting on the 60's (re-issue) PU later on.

Mystery Pickup

The mystery pickup pole pieces are flat to the top of the pickup.
I'll take a photo of the top and post it.

re: wiring. My buddy is a Tech and actually did the soldering. I'm sure he did it correctly as I've been loving the tone. I'm really enjoying the stack-knob concentric configuration. It's darker than the Jazz Bass standard I'm sure. The pots were rebuilt to dual 250k CTS and the era-correct resistor and wiring hookup copied from an original 1960 control harness on-hand. The position of the bridge pickup cavity may have something to contribute too?

I've discovered D'Addario Chrome Flats really enhance the sound of the neck Antiquity II soloed. It's almost P Bass like in tone. Huge amounts of vibe and punch with both on full.
