Pole sticking up too far

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, not so much a change of heart about sticking new pups in my J bass, it's going to happen, just dont know if I can afford it right now.

Tone-wise it's ok right now (tho not spectacular). But the biggest problem is the poles are a bit all over the place.

The biggest problem is one of the poles on the the E string side of the bridge pup is pretty raised, to the point that if you dig in, the string clatters it. Any suggestion on how to approach this? Or was it common in '70s J basses (Aria, made in Matsukoku ~77-78).

Cheers

- Will

In another thread, it was recommended to coat the top of the pole piece with clear nail polish. 'Sally Hanson Hard As Nails' seems to be the preferred brand. Seriously...

If they are that far out of whack, they can probably be tapped back into place. matsumoko did do some odd ball stuff back there but wacky, irrational pole piece heights wouldn;t have been one of them...

Seriously, you should try gently tapping the high pieces back into shape. Gently - if it fight's hard then you need to back off lest things go from bad to worse.
