Gee I always thought pro rock bass WAS the modern sound!

I don't have an answer to your question, but I'm a big Shulman fan myself, and voiced my neck pickup to get his P bass tone.

Of course Wetton got a great tone too. Those two just used a stock P bass with Rotosounds.
