Poor man's master/blend "PJ" wiring mod

Sign in to disble this ad
I didn't like the interaction between the tone and "P" volume control of my "J" wired "PJ" so I rewired it to be standard "P" wiring with the "J" pickup still wired to its pot in the "J" standard way but the output of that pot connected directly to the "P" pickup. This loses the ability to solo the "J" or to have it at a higher Volume than the "P" but does convert the "P" volume into a master and the "J" volume into a control that blends in the "J" pickup. I'm really liking this setup (and it's a zero $$$ mod ) and was wondering if anybody else has tried this?

A handful of people here have done setups with two volumes feeding into an additional master volume.

I suppose if the way you play your PJ is to always use the P and dial in some J when you want it, that setup would work great.
Personally, my main tone is to solo the J pickup, so such a setup would be useless to me.

What I would do is add a switch to solo the J through the master volume, for when you want that sound.

I do enjoy messing around with the "J" solo'd but I don't think I'd ever use that tone live. I haven't yet tried the pickups in series - if I like that I may replace the "J" volume with a rotary switch to select pickup combinations (P, J, P+J parallel, P+J series ?). I'm also going to replace the tone control with a "poor man's" (caps only) varitone - about $6 .
