Poor man's Urge Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, I have tried searching this forum for this topic but couldn't find it, so I apologize if it has been up before. Is it possible to squeeze in some P pups into a Fender Jazz? I have been eyeing the distance between the two jazz pups and have wondered if it is possible. I know it may seem a bit closer to the bridge than usual but that's where I liek to play. Has anyone done this and is it possible?

I did some calcs based on info I have...

rout dist. dist.
coil centre width bridge neck
J-bridge 31.484 1.25 30.859 32.109
P-DG 29.23 1.08 28.69 29.77
P-EA 28.02 1.08 27.48 28.56
J-neck 27.92 1.25 27.295 28.545

distance between jazz pups 4.814
width of P-pickup rout 2.29
leftover space available 2.524

So given that you have about 4.5 inches to play with and the total width of a P-pickup rout (both coils) is about 2.3 ... you have about 2 inches to play with...

so YEP...it will fit...

Well, the Cort has the P pickup pushed up right against the neck, instead of in between the two Js.

By the way. You can created a signature, instead of having to write 'Fender Precision Bass 24 Campaigner #1' at the end of every post. Just go to My TalkBass in the Tool Bar up twards the top of the page. The link to 'Edit Sig.' should be on the left.

I've tried that bass once and it was just absolute crap. You can forget slapping that thing. Turst me, you're better off modding a jazz.

If you really get the Urge and want to install Urge 1 electronics (active bass/treble, four-position switch with active/active (with adjustable mid boost)/passive (bass control becomes passive tone control)/standby), I just happen to know where you can get a NOS preamp

The P pickup position seems to be just toward the bridge from the J neck pickup position to be able to do that.

Or make a kind of like an Urge/Roscoe Beck with a five position switch like a Fender Strat. Neck single, neck dual, P, bridge dual, bridge single.

It has seemed interesting to me that all these basses that have all these switches and knobs, but still just two soapbar pickups.
A MusicMan Stingray HH is very close to the bass you describe.

You can actually get a semi decent P-sound by soloing the neck pickup and by running the outside coils (coils 1 and 4) you can get a fairly decent Jazz sound...and of course, you get a Stingray sound by running the bridge pickup (coils 3 and 4)....

the roscoe beck's and the G&L L2000/2500 are also tone cameleons in this regard.
