pop a preamp into my moses?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been playing around with the thought of this for a while, and as i'm about to make an order from the states i was thinking i might get this on too if i found something neat.

Clue is, i love playing my Moses Starhawk, but i never liked the electronics, and its got a really low output. I really dont know much about electronics, so i'm wondering if i could just pop something like the aguilar obp-2 in there..? I've got a stacked bass/treble pot + volume and balance from before, and its a rather tight little cavity.

FWIW:

by electronics it sound's like you're referring to the controls and excluding the pups in that mix so I'm guessing you're satisfied with the sound of the bass other than output?

I never understand the low output pup thing when the amp will crank all the output you want unless you're underpowered amp wise - not pup wise.

If you've got a small space that's not a good start for adding a preamp - unless you have battery box(s) installed. Neither is having no experience with transplants but you've got to start somewhere unless you're going to outsource them.

You can accomplish the same thing with an outboard pre unless you just want boost/cut controls on the bass - which I can think of no reason for cause you've got a full compliment of passive control onboard already which will get you buy in any pinch (and you rarely get with a passive by-pass with an onboard pre). Then you don't have to do anything to the bass, it's plug/unplug and play, and you can use it with any bass. You can go from a Sans to Sad to OBP in minutes - and actually know what they do and don't do to your signal chain. You can't A/B an onboard pre to know what it's actually doing - and thats something to be aware of when you're choosing an onboard pre based on others experiences with them. In addition many of the outboards are DI's and offer options most onboard preamps don't - so you get some bells/whistles in addition to a DI.

In short, the always exceptions excluded, there's no advantage to an onboard pre I can think of but there are a lot of disadvantages.

definetly lots of good points there, havent really considered an outboard pre for other than di-reasons, but this might be my excuse to get that sansamp i've been thinking about
