Question Popping sound out of my Dean Edge 4?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi

Reasently, my Dean Edge 4 w/ active electronics have started to put out some strange popping sound both when I play it. The sound is similar to a discharging pop and can occur both when I play but also when I'm not touching the strings (i.e. between songs).

Does anyone know how to solve a problem like this? I think I have isolated the problem to the bass beacuse the popping sound does not occur when turning the bass volyme know down.

Regards
MrBaloo

Can you elaborate on what you mean by this?

Do you mean like the sound it makes when you take the jack out when the amp is still on? If so, it could be that your jack socket is loose and the contact is not always touching the plug.

If not, this could be caused by distortion on the preamp due to a low battery (volume knob down low probably means the preamp is working on a lower signal). Try changing the battery to see what happens.

I had to change both of my edge's batterys this week too, they will make the sound you are talking about.

If it makes crackling and popping noises, then it's most likely your jack. I have an Edge Q4 and it did the same thing until I got the jack replaced.

Yes, it sounds like when you take the jack out when the amp is still on. I have tried to change battery, but without luck. Ok, I have to look at the jack and see if I must have it repaired.

Thanks!

Ok, I have now used a digital multimeter and found the following:

- I have electrical connection between the strings (I'll guess that it is connection within the bridge)
- I have very poor electrical connection between the strings and the outer surface of the bridge (the bridge is coated with some kind of black paint)
- It is no connection between the bridge (or the strings) and the output jack's ground (sleeve at a TS-cable)

Is it common that the bridge is not connected to ground?

Hi again

Now I think I have found a solution for the bass problem: I tried to exchange the Fender Super Bass 7250s (7250 M) strings to a set of used EB Super Slinky Bass strings. The only apperant difference is that the Fender strings are with some kind of fabric wrapped around each end of the string. Now the bass works as it is supposed without the popping/discharing sound.

It is kind of funny how the problem wasn't dependen on grounding the bass to "the world" through an amplifier. The problem was there even if I used a battery driven headphone amplifier.

No, It didn't work for long. Now the popping sound is back. But I have found that the grounding wire from the bridge to the electronics do not connect properly. Probably I have to look how the grounding wire is connected to the bridge.

Had that problem on a Edge 5 with the same problem. The issue is comming from the way the jack receiver was designed. The jack isn't mounted secuelyto the body, so slight movements can cause the poppong. I fixed it by installing a new jack attached to an exterio mounted plate. No problems now.

Yes, the grounding wire under the bridge had not a properly connection to bridge. Now when I have fixed that grounding problem, I hope the main problem is solved.

Ok, it seems like I have a problem with the output jack too (despite fixing the ground wire under the bridge)...

Finally i ended up fixing the following things:

- secure grounding the bridge
- replacing the output jack
- replacing the battery connector (the black wire was broken)

Now everything seems to be fine! I must test the bass more until it will be released to the next live playing...
