Possible set up for P-bass...Advice?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've had thoughts of making my Squier P-bass active, lately. I'd use a passive pickup and active pre-amp, to make things a little easier. (In case I can't afford the pickups to go with them).

I've seen the Blackouts Concentric Tone knob Tone Circuit (Bass/Treble) on Musicians Friend, and I was wondering what the word was on it. I couldn't find a thread about it, or a review.

I know for pickups, I'd want to try to use DiMarzio DP127's, simply because I have better luck with rail/blade-style pickups versus pole piece types.

I looked at saving the extra cash for a Bartolini setup for a single pickup, much like this one.

Any suggestions/feedback?

I DID look at those, but I was hoping to ask questions about it, because I can't figure out how it's wired, and if it's a true active pre-amp or not.

I see four wires coming from it, one of them being red. I'm 99% positive that it requires the use of a battery.

Are you any good with wiring and are you opposed to a boost-only preamp? I'd be willing to sell you my TonePump Jr from my Spector for less than that SD thing.

I am pretty good with wiring. I had to fix all the poor wiring in the same bass this pre-amp will be going into. It's kind of like working on a car, I'm a mechanic when I need to be.

And about the TP Jr.... I'm not THAT opposed to boost-only pre-amps, as long as they don't boost too much too quickly. It's a Treble and Bass preamp, right? No mids?
