Post Your Soundclips Here!

I can't find very many sound clips of different types of pickups. This is not only in this site, but also in general. Go to any guitar and bass pickup manufacturer and you will usually find plenty of sound clips of their guitar pickups and you'd be damn lucky to get a bass pickup sound clip. I'd like to get this thread started so the first link is a comparison of the Seymour Duncan SPB-3 vs. DiMarzio DP122 Model P vs. Fender '62 Original P Bass Pickup.

Here

The second is a comparison of the EMG 35J pickup vs the EMG35TW dual coil with coil taps pickup that is currently in my Schecter Stiletto Elite-4.

Here

Please respond with any sound clips you have and please list the pickups that are featured as well as the bass, if you can. If we get enough clips together we can make this the definitive source for clips of what this or that pickup actually sound like (maybe even a sticky later on).

A Million Cool Points to the person that brings a clip of a SD Jazz Bass Antiquity II pickup. A revered jazz pickup without any clips that I can find.

Am I the only one that thinks that bass players get shafted when it comes to proper previews of what their $100+ purchases are going to sound like.

Kudos to the companies that actually provide good sound clips. Boss isn't too bad at it.

Here are some sound files of some of the bass pickups I make. I'll add more as I can.

I would really appreciate clips of the pickups, I have little experience of them and am planning on modding my cheapie, so post away!

Bart MMC w/o any tone controls straight to a Pandora and on to a laptop. Some slight smilie faced EQ in the pandora.

I'll agree that those are good clips, but that yahoo briefcase hasn't been working for quite a while. We need to get that stuff hosted on a longer term/more reliable host.

Great tone on all those clips, Davo. Those Nordstrands sound different than I have heard in the past. Those had a really nice warm, round tone. The clips of those I had heard in the past were fairly trebly and dry. Great work.

I haven't tried many pickup manufacturers, but I stumbled upon Nordstand. They provide great products and great service and so they get my custom everytime.

IMHO you can get almost any tone with Audere Pre and Norstrand PUs and hand placement within the constraints of your bass wood selection.

The CB bass tone that you hear is using a touch of bass boost on a 90% bridge pickup setting - everything else flat. I prefer the bridge PU tone in all the basses I try, including pre-CBS Jazzes.

The Jaco Jazz tone is 90 or 100% bridge PU and flat EQ. I use Sunbeams mostly, which give slightly less zing but lots of lovely mids when compared to SS rounds.

I only ever use roundwounds. I cannot cope with flats.

I contacted David Wilson about his Jazz Bass Pickup comparison that used to be hosted in a Yahoo Briefcase. Looks like he's got a new hoster now that works!

http://pickups.dmw.ftml.net

Also, I contacted Seymour Duncan about them only having guitar clips and this is what they said:
"We recorded some bass tracks and found that they all blend together when listening to them through computer speakers (more so than the guitar tracks) We didn't want to give the wrong impression when people were listening to the sound clips."

I replied to that by referencing TalkBass and BassTasters and how we can tell the difference between a Bart C and a Bart CX pickup as long as they aren't buried in the mix.

My personal feeling is that any examples of a pickup (guitar or bass) should be completely dry and by itself. SD has guitar pickup sound clips that are distorted. What's the point when a guitar effect is what you're hearing at that point?

Your thoughts...

I can kinda see their point on computer speaker bass recreation. Most people do have less than optimal sound systems on their computers.

That's true, but I think they're referring to sound clips of a bass in a normal rock band song. Usually a bass will sound similar through PC speakers hidden behind a band. But I suggested to them to just to straight sound clips with a pick, finger, and slap version of each.

If someone was looking for a new bass pickup, they have a lot of choices and almost no one will just buy 20 pickups to compare and see which one they like. The average person looks at a few reviews and then buys a pickup and is stuck with it after that unless they want to spend the time and money to remove it and ship it back (less the shipping, restocking, and transaction fees).

I agree. I see their point but the burden should be on the end buyer to be smart enough to know whether he's running though a pair of $25 PC speakers or not.

The big singles sound awesome in your clips. I was checking out another clip of BS's and it kinda turned me off, but if they can sound like that I may commit. Yours sounds fat warm and round with good mid detail.

Bro your drummer is killing me.
