Which pot to achieve...

Sign in to disble this ad
the sound I'm going for.

I'm about 2 weeks away from having my custom build complete.
It's pots, caps and knobs order time.

My bass is 32" scale mahogany and the sound I'm aiming for is something between my eb0 and my Jazz. I'm using Dimarzio pups.
A humbucking model one and a bridge ultra jazz. I'm dense when it comes to electronics, and would like to hear some suggestions. I've done a bit of searching, but that just seems to open up more questions.

My initial thoughts are to use whatever is in my eb0 for the bucker, and whatever is in the jazz for the ultra jazz. Also, I would like to have concentric tone and volume stacked knobs. Will that limit my options, too?

TIA

Mentioning EBO and saying HB DM I assume you mean like a Model 1 or G. The ultra Jazz is a 4 lead humbucker by the way. 500K is the standard for HB's but there's no big time difference between them and 250's in my experience and you can get a lot more variation from caps.

Stacks are basically just two pots together so there's no tone limitation one way or the other if you're using an equivalent number of pots total (2 stacks = 4 singles).

You can add switching if you want more tone options - and that can get messy and complicated so if you're doing this yourself you're probably looking for some grief if you go that route.

Yes, model 1.
I did not know the ultra jazz was a humbucker. Oh well, I'm just gonna hafta pray to the First Bass Build Gods and put it in their hands at this point. Thanks for the 411 on the pots and knobs, too.

Just ordered concentric 500/250 pots (x2)
.047 caps (x2) In your opinion, will these caps provide a good range?
stacked knobs (x2)
copper shielding
and the jack.

.047mfd is the standard cap for bass, although seems Fender puts .1 in theirs but that's pretty much on the extreme dark side.

With this build, I hope to remove a bit of dark side from the eb) sound, so it sounds like the .047 is the way to go.

Thanks again!
