pot shaft moving

The volume pot shaft on my bass moves in and out (not due to a loose nut) and has scratchy intermittent functioning... does this automatically mean it needs to be replaced?

That's weird, but it sounds shot to me. You might be able to rescue it but new pots are like 2-4 bucks, so your choice.
