how do you test a pot with a multimeter?

reading pot DC resistance

set the meter to ohms..put the hot lead from the meter to one of the outer tabs of the pot...put the other lead to the other outer tab of the pot.

Between the two outside legs of the pot you should get whatever the value of the pot is. From the middle leg (wiper) to either outside leg it will be variable between 0 ohms and the value between the outside legs.
