Pots confusion?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm building a bass on my own :]

anyway,

i have a dual coil pickup.

basically its two jazz pickups combined. Its the same thing as a musicman bucker pretty much.

anyway, the pickup allows for selections of :

Both On, Bridge Only, Front Only.

It has 4 wires.
How should i set this up? Is varitone switch what i need?
Vol/Vol/Tone/Tone? or Vol/ Switch/ ??/??
im confused!
The being two pickups in one confuses me.

Thanks for the help!

Patience. Snarky remarks won't get what you want.

That said, there's more than one way to wire any system. You might think about what you're looking for as far as capabilities go. I'm sure it would help the people who, unlike me, actually know something about electronics. ^_^

The good news is you have lots of choices... the bad news is you have lots of choices.

You can do:
volume/volume/tone/tone
volume/volume/tone
volume/blend/tone

you can combine the two sides:
in parallel in phase (noise canceling)
in series in phase (noise canceling)
in parallel out of phase
in series out of phase
any combination of these with a selector switch

Each choice has some effect on the sounds you can get and on the ease of changing from one sound to another.

it's mostly a case of personal preference. I think the only really good way to figure out what to do is to play a bunch of basses with different configurations to see what you like.

But you can treat it like two pickups - two wires for each coil.

I just realized I left out one important configuration. You could hook it up just volume/tone. My personal preference would be to set it up volume/tone with a series/parallel switch. This configuration could always be noise canceling and would give you some tonal variation from the parallel/series switch.

I like that better....so two pots and a switch? or what?
I really know nothing about pots so you'll have to lay it out for me...

You can find the details here on the guitarelectronics.com web site. First the pickup is wired to the switch like third diagram down on the right (marked Series/Parallel).

http://guitarelectronics.zoovy.com/c...kerwiringmods/

Then the point on the switch labeled "Hot output to pickup switch or volume" is connected to the volume pot in the diagram below. You want to ignore the switch in the second diagram.

Good luck.

okay, none of that makes sense to me......so i'm going to find someone to do it for me.

but I decided i'm going to put 3 or 4 humbuckers in and the humbucker i'm questioning is going to be just vol/tone as well as the others.
