Pots & Pups On Acoustic/Electric

I`m a big fan of acoustic bass guitars. For me playing in a praise & worship band they seem to be about right for tones produced when playing with acoustic guitars.
I have noticed that ALMOST all such guitars use Fishman or similar equalizers but very few use knobs. Knobs seem handier or faster to use & adjust.
I think it might be nice to assemble a custom beginning with a EQ setup jumbo bass body and strip it of the electronics and do a replacement that would incorporate knobs rather than sliders. Perhaps defretting and switching to B*E*A*D tuning as well. Is it practical costwise to do this? Thanks & take care. Bob

Personally I prefer a semi-hollow body acoustic bass like my Carvin AC50. It comes in fretless, 4 or 5 string, and has vol, bass, treble. on knobs. It has exactly the sound you want. The big advantage of the semi-hollow is that it is nearly immune to feedback. The big guitar-like bass bodies are VERY prone to bass feedback.

If you want a custom setup, it's pretty easy to do. An Acoustic bass uses a piezo pickup that takes a VERY high impedance input. Like 10 megohms! Fishman and some others make preamps that do this. The preamp output impedance will be fairly low so that after the preamp you can install just about any kind of EQ or circuit you choose. My favorite acoustic preamp circuit is the Fishman "power chip". It's a little circuit board with all manner of features that includes stereo out and the ability to mix in a magnetic pickup. Check one out at MF.

Thanks bassbenji. I checked them out here:

What a beautiful instrument. I just sold an Epi Jack Casady and still have a Dean Rhapsody. Both semi hollow but nothing like the Carvins. I notice that they employ both Piezo pickups & knobe. Seems like an unusual combination.
What about upgrading the Dean? Can I get a better sound from it. As things are now I much prefere my Hohner full body acoustics for tone but am thinking of defretting and restringing the Dean to B E A D if I can get it to sound better. Where can I learn more about the components & their relationship to each other. I have never been able to resist changing things around be it cars or rifles or anything i have ever been around I seem to be drawn to custom made. Is there a book with diagrahms that I might be able to learn from.
Thanks again & take care. Bob

Since I started this thread a few days ago I came across this item that seems to be able to do just what I was hoping for:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ARTEC-CLE-Acoust...item2a0c1f634d

Does this appear to be a practical solution to updating the electronics on my Hohner acoustic bass.
I did not mention in the OP but there is also a cracking going on at my input jack. Might it also be a good time to install a new jack in the process? Need advice. Thanks & take care. Bob
