I have noticed that ALMOST all such guitars use Fishman or similar equalizers but very few use knobs. Knobs seem handier or faster to use & adjust.
I think it might be nice to assemble a custom beginning with a EQ setup jumbo bass body and strip it of the electronics and do a replacement that would incorporate knobs rather than sliders. Perhaps defretting and switching to B*E*A*D tuning as well. Is it practical costwise to do this? Thanks & take care. Bob |
Personally I prefer a semi-hollow body acoustic bass like my Carvin AC50. It comes in fretless, 4 or 5 string, and has vol, bass, treble. on knobs. It has exactly the sound you want. The big advantage of the semi-hollow is that it is nearly immune to feedback. The big guitar-like bass bodies are VERY prone to bass feedback.
If you want a custom setup, it's pretty easy to do. An Acoustic bass uses a piezo pickup that takes a VERY high impedance input. Like 10 megohms! Fishman and some others make preamps that do this. The preamp output impedance will be fairly low so that after the preamp you can install just about any kind of EQ or circuit you choose. My favorite acoustic preamp circuit is the Fishman "power chip". It's a little circuit board with all manner of features that includes stereo out and the ability to mix in a magnetic pickup. Check one out at MF.
