Pots with an uneven sweep?

Sign in to disble this ad
The pots on the Steinberger I recently bought have a very uneven sweep on the volume. The pots slowly increase volume until the lastt 1/5 of the turn where it increases volume substantially. Is this common? They're 500k pots, so I guess they would increase fairly rapidly, but is this a problem?

This is why I prefer the linear taper for volume pots.

Try it, you'll probably like them.

Is there anything special about linear taper I'll need to accommodate wiring-wise?

I haven't gutted and re-wired/replaced parts on a bass yet (preamps intimidate me! ), but I've resurrected a few [seemingly] hopeless guitars and modified my own. I wind up with the same problem, only opposite: they barely lower volume until the last bit of the sweep and then the volume just cuts off.

This is normal for audio taper? I really don't mean to hijack this thread start another audio v. linear war, but could you explain more on how this unevenness occurs?

Because we perceive sound changes differently than the rate of electrical changes. Audio taper pots are built with the resistance sweep that stacks up towards the end, IE, on a logarithm scale. Linear taper pots are even.
I got my linear taper pots at http://www.tubesandmore.com/

I had a crazy harness in an old bass that used (IIRC) logarithmic pots.
Dialing that mess in was difficult.

I'm kinda wondering the same thing. What are the exact differences between audio and linear?

nope, that's what linear volumes do into overdriven guitar circuits. the compression/distortion pushes up the middles of those curves, to where the audio acts linear and the linear acts more like a reverse audio.

blues, rock guitar? get audio taper volumes.

normal bass, clean jazz guitar? you'll want linear volumes.
