Powering 12v wall powered unit with batteries?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an effects unit that I want to power by battery.
At the minute the unit is only powered by a 12v wall adapter.

Is there any kind of convertor or adapter on the market that I could plug into the plug on my unit so I could power it by battery as gigging with the wall adapter in just isnt practical...

man, I've never seen anything like that. It wouldn't be too complicated to build something, though. Scavenge a battery compartment from a kids' toy or something and run off 8 AAAs. Mind the current specs.

AAA batteries probably cannot supply the same current a wall wart would, depending on how much current the pedal is drawing.

In an offhand way, I think it'd probably be fine with 8 of them unless the pedal has a tube. go bigger if it isn't.

too lazy to search - sorry.

Is it 12V AC or DC?

If it is DC you can use something like these:

You should arrange a cable with the same adapter plug to connect to the battery holder.

If it is AC it's gonna be complicated to arrange batteries and connection point inside the effects unit.

Key item is how much current does it draw? You may have to measure it to get a handle on what kind of battery you'd need.

For currents up to 1/2 amp I'd go with a battery holder and multiple flashlight D cells.

If the current draw is more than that then you'll need a small rechargeable lead-acid gel-cell like for lawn mowers or trimmers.

The key is to get a gig-length battery life without something too big and heavy.

Why isn't a wall-wart practical? Doesn't your amp have to plug in somewhere?

It would help if we knew what the effect was Especially current draw. How long do the batteries need to last?
