Powering Active Pickups Through Cable?

Sign in to disble this ad
As far as I can tell the Gibson Robot guitar is powered by the patch cable through a special ring in the input plug... Was wondering if anyone knows if it'd be possible to power, say, a set of EMGs or an active preamp through the patch cord. Sort of like phantom power I suppose. You'd need to have some kind of power source between the bass and amp I guess but it seems like a cool idea.

Thoughts?

I always thought this would be a good idea...I'd maybe even take it further and make the jack a balanced signal, too.

use phantom power... Sadly, not every board supports phantom power - and I've never seen a bass amp that does...

but that's be a fine idea.

Then again, what's wrong with passive pickups?

Alembic Series instruments are powered(18 volts) thru a 5 pin cable to a power supply box that also routes the two signals.
