Pre Amp connection question

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm guessing there's no right or wrong or better than the other about it, but wanted to ask anyone who uses a pre amp with an amp that just has one input and doesn't provide active & passive input choices which connection method you prefer:

Bass> Pre amp > amp input
or
Bass> Pre amp > effects return

if the preamp has any tone controls (b/m/t) then i use effects return so i can blend the preamp signal with the amp signal. i plug into the appropriate active/passive input on preamp

if the preamp has no tone controls (just level or gain/ouput) then i plug into the active jack of amp

if you don't have a choice of where to plug in, well, that kinda simplifies things

I use the passive input on my Trace Elliot with my active basses. It sounds better than the active input.

You can use the effects return, but then you'd probably be bypassing the preamp in the amp, and your level might be low.

There's no good reason to assume an active bass has inherently higher output than a passive bass. Therefore, hardly any bass needs to use the "active" input on an amp.
